It may still be hoodie weather, but guess what? Your garden is ready to party.
We’re dancing on the edge of that last frost date here in Chicagoland (usually mid-May-ish), which means it’s not quite time to toss your tomatoes and peppers outside in their party clothes—but it is the perfect moment to get a jump on the season.

Here’s what you can confidently plant right now:
Root veggies like carrots, beets, and radishes thrive in cooler soil.
Cold-hardy greens such as lettuce, arugula, and kale are basically built for spring’s mood swings.
Broccoli, cabbage, and peas are tough cookies and love a chill start.
Pro tip:
Get strategic with succession planting—sow a little every couple weeks and you’ll keep the harvest flowing all season long instead of getting buried in 40 beets at once.
And if you're still in the planning phase, now’s a great time to map out your garden beds, plan your crop rotation, or start imagining where those Supersweet 100 Cherry Tomato or Aji Cristal Pepper starts are going to go after the frost says goodbye.

So bundle up, grab your seeds, and get planting—because spring waits for no one!
